design archive

archive /’är,kīv/ - “a collection of historical documents or records providing information about a place, institution, or group of people...”

design archive is the new home for Canada’s design museum and residence program; hosting artist studios and gallery space that showcases the best of Canadian art and design. The space it designed to be a public platform in which local and regional communities can explore the role of design in a Canadian context.Thoughtful design can stimulate innovation, promote healthy cities and drive economic growth, taking into consideration the social, economic and environmental aspects of any given project. Located in an old industrial area in Toronto, Ontario, 950 Dupont St provides an urban space dedicated to collecting, testing and promoting design culture.

The adaptive reuse strategy aims to respect and display the narrative of the site by highlighting elements that represent the larger context of the local community and Canada’s industrial fabric. An urban canvas of graffiti and the industrial glass and steel structure of an old gear factory remain, contrasted by the added mass timber structure. The cross laminated timber system reflects the overarching concept of the project; using sustainable design practices to promote innovative spaces and healthy cities. It emphasizes the importance of biophilic design,

contributing to the overall wellbeing off its occupants by providing a warm, welcoming environment. The panels are individually designed with the assembly details milled in off site, enabling an efficient assembly process on site.

The interior spaces reflect the larger aspirations of the project, giving careful consideration to the sensory qualities of mass timber on a variety of scales, from the visual warmth and robustness of the workshop environment to the tactile qualities of a railing.
